ICC After School Program kindergarteners continued the engineering design process as they read Creepy Carrots, the story of a rabbit who thinks carrots are following him! Our young engineers jumped in to help, planning their own solutions to keep the carrots in the garden. Using items from our STEM tubs, they built creative ways to contain those sneaky carrots. Check out their innovative designs!

As part of our problem-based learning unit on natural hazards, students undertook a hands-on engineering challenge to design and build a structure that could withstand a model shaker earthquake. The project’s criteria required students to construct a building at least 30 cm high within a strict time limit of 20 minutes. Additionally, they worked with specific constraints, including a $70 budget, where mini marshmallows cost $2 each and spaghetti noodles cost $1 each. Following the engineering design process, students brainstormed, sketched, and iterated on their ideas before the build stage. This activity allowed them to think critically about budget limitations, structural integrity, and the real-world impacts of earthquake resistance in buildings. Through this project, students gained a deeper understanding of how structural engineers approach the challenges of building in earthquake-prone areas and the importance of thoughtful planning and innovation in managing natural hazards. Once we realized a structure was solid, we had a little fun and the earthquake became more intense! Stay tuned for more problem based learning projects as we answer the big question, "How do changes in Earth’s surface affect people, and what can be done about them?". For videos and more on this ongoing project, join Mrs. Amber's facebook page! https://www.facebook.com/groups/458663553698566

The Jr High Cougar Quiz Bowl team attended the AGQBA Junior High Camp at Cotter High School today. They joined students from 7 area schools in a variety of mixed teams and games, and they had a very successful experience! Several Cougars earned special honors on the day: Freshman Evan Cole earned the 9th grade High Point Honors answering a total of 64 questions correctly. He was nominated to the All-Tournament Team and a member of the 3rd place team overall. Eighth grade student Ian Bear earned the 8th grade High Point Honors answering a total of 64 questions correctly. He was also nominated for the All-Tournament Team and was a member of the 1st place team. Alex Millington was nominated for the All-Tournament team answering a total of 28 questions correctly and was a member of the 2nd place team overall. After successful completion of the PowerPoint unit on Testout, an online IT training courseware that helps prepare students for certification and real-world skills, Mrs. Jackson's Survey of Business students created their own Microsoft PowerPoint presentation with a Halloween theme. They were required to give reasoning or examples of why teens their age should or should not go trick or treating, with slides that included transitions, pictures, and animations. They have done a great job!

We'd like to congratulate Coach Billy McBride and the Lady Cougars who have earned a bid in the 2A State Volleyball Tournament! They've worked incredibly hard all season long. While last night's game didn't end the way they hoped, it absolutely wasn't for a lack of heart or effort. We're beyond proud of the grit that these girls have shown... and we can't wait to cheer them on as they head to STATE next week! Their first state game will be on Tuesday at 5pm at Hackett High School. They'll play Conway St. Joseph. Full brackets can be found here: https://www.si.com/high-school/stats/arkansas/volleyball/brackets/8290 We will post the link to purchase tickets as soon as it is available! Let's go, Lady Cougars!

Izard County Kindergarten After School Program explored the engineering design process through the story Jack the Builder! After reading about Jack’s imaginative builds with blocks, students chose 2 to 4 blocks, sketched their designs, and got creative. They soon discovered they needed more blocks to bring their visions to life! Check out the students in action as they refine their designs and build their creations
